Begin the trip in the morning and head to explore some of the most beautiful tourist destinations located in the region of Fez. You will stop first in Sefrou (28 km south of Fes), a very ancient walled town at the foothills of the Middle Atlas Mountain range. However, it is essentially known for cherry production, hence a Cherry Festival which is endorsed by UNESCO is held annually every June. Indeed, Sefrou is a place where you might actually want to do some walking as it is high enough to avoid the dry summer heat.
The drive continues to Azrou and around, but before getting there, you will stop by Ifrane, a quite impressive town with pseudo-alpine villas and weather due to the frequent snowfall. The town’s prominent landmark “stone lion”, carved apparently by an Italian prisoner of war, sits in one of the parks. Yet, the statue commemorates the last wild Atlas Lion being shot in the 1920s. Drive another 20km to Azrou, the first real town of the verdant Middle Atlas. Azrou (“Rock” in Tamazight) is named after a massive outcrop adjacent to the town. Fundamentally, Azrou is noted for the nearby Atlas Cedar Forest, home to the endangered Barbary Apes.
Get back to Fes by late afternoon.
N.B. lunch will be served in either Ifrane or Azrou, depending on time or on your choice.
