3-Day Trip: Marrakech To Fes Via Sahara Desert

Start the journey from Marrakech via the High Atlas Mountains. Immerse yourself into the Kasbahs, valleys, gorges and oases of the south of Morocco and enjoy camel riding in the Sahara Desert of Merzouga. Drive along the valley of Ziz and cross the Middle Atlas Mountains in your way to Fes.
  • Day 1

Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou - Ouarzazate – Rose Valley – Dades Valley.

You will set out from Marrakech towards the south, where you will cross the High Atlas Mountains via the highest pass in Morocco, the Tichka Pass. At an altitude of 2260 m. a. s. l, the road offers beautiful scenery and panoramic views. As you go down the mountains, you will end up at the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou. It is a twelfth century fortified village built within the ancient caravan route which connected the Sahara with the northern cities. Now, the Kasbah is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a distinctive location for moviemakers. Many films and series have been filmed there, including: The Mummy, Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, Game of Thrones etc.

After midday, you will continue to Ouarzazate, the Hollywood of Africa and then drive along the road of a thousand Kasbahs to the palm grove of Skoura, Rose Valley (known for the cultivation of roses), and on to your accommodation in Dades Valley.

  • Day 2

Dades Valley – Todra Gorges – Rissani – Merzouga.

From Dades Valley, you will drive to Todra Gorges near the town of Tinghir. And there, you will be able to go around for a walk within its stunning canyon walls. Thereafter, you will drive to Rissani, a market town, which is located in the oasis of Tafitalet. By the afternoon, you will arrive to Merzouga where your real adventure commences. From the village of Merzouga, you will mount camels for about an hour across its great sand dunes to the camp and you will stop half-way for the mesmerizing view of sunset.

After dinner in your camp, there will be a drum show performed by the staff. It is, indeed, the best place to snap and admire the stars, shooting, and the milky-way.

  • Day 3

Merzouga – Erfoud - Ziz Valley – Ifrane – Fes.

You will need to get up early morning for a memorable sunrise the following day. After breakfast, you will ride camels and take the route back to the village where you shall change your means of transport and drive again. On the way to Fes, you will past by Erfoud, the town of fossils, Ziz valley, Ziz gorges, the Middle Atlas Mountains, Cedar forests of Azrou, before you arrive to Ifrane, the Switzerland-like town of Morocco. Ifrane is known especially for its pseudo-alpine weather and villas.

In some cases, the third day itinerary can be done with a Spanish, French or English speaking taxi driver. Depending on availability
